NW200 – All the action from the week of racing!
What a week for the 2018 International North West 200! Between glorious weather, show-stopping performances and record-breaking crowds, this year’s event is being considered one of the best of all time, uniting over 100 of the world’s top racers to take to the roads and wow on-lookers with their impressive skills, all set on the magnificent backdrop of the North Coast.
If you didn’t manage to catch the action live last weekend, fear not. We’ve summarised exactly what you need to know about the 2018 event… (WARNING: This post contains spoilers!).
1.) Alastair Seeley and Glenn Irwin were the standout stars. Both won BIG, with Irwin taking home two Superbike wins, and Seeley completing a mind-blowing hat-trick. It was a great achievement for Northern Ireland racing!
2.) Irwin was the clear leader throughout his two superbike races, guiding the pack from the offset in what has been hailed as beautifully reminiscent of Carl Fogarty’s similar wins in 1993. Fittingly, Carl was onsite to see Irwin’s wins and congratulate him personally.
3.) Meanwhile, Seeley won the opening Supersport event on Thursday, which ensured his record of having won a race at the event every year since 2008 was intact. He went on to claim the top spots in the Supersport and Superstock events, amassing an impressive hat-trick.
4.) Alastair’s final win of the NW200 (the Superstock race) took his total win tally to 24 – increasing his lead as the racer with the most wins ever in the NW200’s history.
5.) James Cowton snatched his first win in the Supertwin by a dramatic 0.6 seconds, edging past Joey Thompson at the very last moment.
6.) Sports star Jonathan Rea, three time world superbike champion, jumped on Kawasaki’s supercharged Ninja H2R and undertook a parade lap at the event.
7.) Ian Hutchinson made a comeback after breaking his leg at last year’s Senior TT. He rode a Honda Racing CBR1000RR Fireblade and finished a commendable seventh in the showcase superbike race.
8.) Alastair Seeley was awarded the Robert Dunlop award for man of the meeting.
With the NW200 now complete, racers will look towards the Isle of Man TT races, which are set for the first week of June.
