Potholes – What They Do And How to Avoid Them

Potholes – What They Do And How to Avoid Them

Our bitterly cold winter has certainly been full of weather warnings, longer transit journeys and unfortunately, pesky potholes.

Potholes are often formed by the freezing and thawing of water on the roads, repeated road salting and snow ploughing. As a result, the rising number of potholes isn’t just putting drivers at danger; they are an additional hazard to cyclists and pedestrians. So, with that said, here’s our advice on how to avoid and manage any crumbling roads while on your travels…

Properly inflated tyres

Vehicle preparation is the first step to being extra careful on the roads. Of course, each car has its own specific specifications so consult your vehicle handbook for the manufacturer’s recommendations. Tyres that are too soft, over-inflated or worn and torn won’t hold up well and a sudden bump may cause a rupture.

Slow down

If you spot an impending pothole that you can’t avoid, react quickly and slow down – the faster you hit a pothole, the worse the damage will be. However, whatever you do, don’t break directly over the pothole as this can cause even more destruction.

Beware of puddles

It may just be a puddle but then again, it may not. What looks like a little surface water might have a nasty surprise lurking below. Don’t take any unnecessary chances and use caution when driving over puddles – the last thing you need is a pothole in hiding!

Do not tailgate

If you are bumper to bumper, you won’t be able to see any potholes ahead. By staying well back from vehicles in front, you will be able to see the troublesome pothole before you are right on top of it. It is also a good idea to watch the behaviour of drivers – if they are avoiding a certain area, it’s probably for a good reason.

Avoid distracted driving

Although you should never drive distracted, this is particularly important when the roads are riddled with potholes. Be aware of vehicles in front, behind and beside you, scan the road ahead and have a clean windscreen! Keep your eyes peeled as being distracted can make you miss noticing and avoiding wheel bending potholes.
