The Best December Getaway Destinations

December getaway destinations

We have officially left summer behind and whether you’re dreaming of the beach for some winter sun or perhaps just avoiding the hectic weeks running up to Christmas, there are a few getaway spots that you should bear in mind. Without travelling far you can plan a December trip that ticks all your boxes.

We’ve chosen our favourite December getaway destinations within Europe and a little closer to home to give you a head start on your jet-set plans.

December Getaway Destinations

First up for sunshine is Tenerife. If you’re looking for extra daylight and as much Vitamin D as you can store up without having to travel too far away, Tenerife is the spot for you. With temperatures on average of 20 – 23 degrees centigrade, and the promise of some of the best weather in Europe, it’s unsurprisingly a popular destination. Given the changing landscape in the island, you’ll find various micro climates depending on your location, so head south for more warmth and sun than in the north. While the weather is warm, the ocean does however drop in temperature so you’d be wise to bring wet suits for swimming and something warmer for the evenings, which can be a little chilly.

Next stop for an almost guaranteed 6 hours of daily sunshine is Lanzarote. While having a higher chance of rain than Tenerife, rainfall is still very low as compared with all areas of the UK and Ireland and temperatures are warm enough to make a visit very appealing. You can feel smug that everyone at home is shivering, while you look forward to taking a submarine safari or celebrating Christmas day on the beach, just imagine!

If you’re not looking for a sunshine break but happy with a little European travel, consider Budapest for a long weekend. Truly one of the most beautiful winter cities to visit, expect picture perfect streets and a wonderful assortment of festive activities to keep you busy. With the city lit by over 1 million twinkling fairy lights, and even the tram awash with 35,000 blue and white lights as it travels alongside the Danube, it’s hard not to feel the holiday spirit. Indulge in mulled wine and poppy seed rolls and stay wrapped up in the crisp, cold weather while you visit Christmas markets and Europe’s largest natural ice rink.

While Paris can be hugely overcrowded in the high months of spring and summer, winter is a love-ly time to visit this romantic and breathtaking city. It is without a doubt magical all year round but if you are a fan of festive decor, fewer crowds and romantic city strolls, Paris in December is a great option. Come prepared, temperatures can really drop and rain is always a possibility but there is no shortage of cafes or galleries to warm up in. When you are outside, we’d suggest you take in the stunning Christmas light display on the Champs Elysée or go for a quick ice skate in the shadow of the Eiffel tower.

Closer to home, a few days’ break in Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh is a joy. With a good range of accommodation on offer, whatever your budget, you can find something central and spend your time taking in the beautiful architecture and warm welcome that the city offers. The Christmas markets are beautifully lit and although busy, are not overwhelming. Stop by The Dome for a festive cocktail and admire the incredible interiors. Don’t miss the Street of Light (located at the end of George Street) with its 60,000 twinkling lights and synchronised music from local choirs. Festive perfection.

If a little cosier and closer to home is what you’re after, we’d suggest Castle Leslie in Co. Monaghan. Think roaring fires, brisk country walks, and warming evening meals and you’re on the right track. Add in the luxury of the Victorian Treatment Rooms spa and the original gothic features of this period property and you will feel miles away from anywhere. It’s tempting to sink into this grandeur and do as little as possible, but you can be active if you prefer. Choose from a huge list of activities to keep you busy, from horse-riding to hot-air ballooning, Castle Leslie has everything covered.

Our last recommendation is a real getaway. Castle Murray House in County Donegal is perfectly remote and romantic, the ideal place to hide away for a few days while the December frenzy continues at home. With incredible views of the crashing ocean outside, and the promise of mouth-watering seafood and perfectly poured Guinness, there is little else you need to detox for a few precious days.
