Result! You’ve earned a place on your university/college course and are now off to enjoy the independence and freedom that comes with being a fresher. But wait… before you go, there are some things any fresher shouldn’t leave home without. Whether you’re hopping across the pond, or just moving into digs on home soil, don’t forget to pack these crucial items.
University Fresher Must Haves
1.) A Really Good Baking Tray
You don’t know it yet, but your baking tray will soon become your best friend. At home it might be used sporadically to do what it says on the tin (ie – bake), but in uni, it becomes much more than this. It is your portal to truly gourmet student dining, as all great student meals happen on a baking tray (pizza, garlic bread, ready meals, etc). Make sure you’ve got one, or face going hungry.
2.) Huge Over-Ear Headphones
University can be loud, really loud. Between people talking in the library when you are trying to study or housemates having parties until the early hours when you are trying to sleep, sometimes all you need is a bit of peace and quiet. Introducing big, noise-cancelling headphones which will become your best friend in those moments of need. Invest in a decent pair and keep them close to hand so that when you need to tune out from the wider world, you can.
3.) Contents Insurance
Ahh contents insurance – the little necessity that chances are you didn’t know you need. Contents insurance protects you should anything you own of value get stolen, or be damaged. That includes your television, computer, mobile phone, or even your clothes, as long as it is located within your declared accommodation. Taking out a policy before you move means you have guaranteed protection in place and won’t have a costly pay-out should disaster strike.
4.) A Decent First Aid Kit
Do you know what isn’t funny your first week of university? Being struck by the dreaded Fresher’s Flu. This particularly nasty bout of flu attacks run down students who have taken the statement ‘staying up all night’ quite literally and now are paying the price with a runny nose, bad cough and a bout of the sniffles. Ward off any unexpected illness with a decent first aid kit, featuring emergency Vitamin C tablets, hayfever relief, cough syrup and lots of tissues. And while you’re at it, why not stock it full of plasters and antiseptic too – an accident is bound to occur at some point.
5.) An Alarm Clock
Okay, okay, before you cry ‘but I’ve got a phone…’ hear us out. Your phone is not invincible, nor is it guaranteed to last forever. One unfortunate drop down the loo or catapult out of your pocket could result in its sad demise, so you must prepare accordingly. An old-fashioned alarm clock could be your saviour if your faithful phone is out of order and you have a 9am lecture you just cannot miss.
6.) Tayto Crisps
Who doesn’t love Tayto? They’re a university fresher must have! Whether it’s as a friend-making tactic or simply to satisfy your cravings, stock up on Tayto beforehand to save regretting that you didn’t. And while you’re at it, why not include potato bread, soda farls and Belfast baps too. Taste of home, are we right?
